Çapanoğlu Family Mausoleum

In Yozgat's central İstanbulluoğlu neighborhood, at the northeastern corner where the first and second sections of the Çapanoğlu (Great) Mosque meet, stands the Çapanoğlu Family Mausoleum — a small-domed, cubic structure of white cut stone projecting from the mosque's outer wall. It was commissioned together with the mosque by Mustafa Bey between 1777 and 1779, a fact recorded in a surviving foundation deed (vakfiye). Built of cut stone on a square plan and covered by a dome, the mausoleum is entered through a round-arched door opening onto the mosque's interior. Its interior is lit by two rectangular windows each on the south and east sides and one on the north, all topped with stained-glass panels. There is no figural ornament inside; only the sarcophagi carry carved "S" and "C" scrolls, rosettes, floral motifs, and cartouches containing daggers, swords, and cypress trees, following the painted-stone tradition typical of Ottoman gravestones. The mausoleum houses a total of 18 sarcophagi of varying sizes, belonging to members of the Çapanoğlu family and Yozgat's notable families of the period. As the family burial site of the Çapanoğlu dynasty — one of the most powerful provincial notable (ayan) families of 18th-century Anatolia — the mausoleum forms an inseparable part of the Çapanoğlu Mosque complex, which remains a defining monument of Yozgat's administrative and social history.
