Çerkez Bey Mausoleum

This mausoleum in Yozgat's Çayıralan district belongs to Çerkez Bey, who held a fief (timar) in the Bozok region in 1542 and later served as the district governor (sanjak bey) of Kırşehir in 1557–58. Sources indicate that in the second half of the 16th century, the site of present-day Çayıralan was Çerkez Bey's private estate. Standing southeast of the mosque known as "Kümbetli Cami" (the Domed Mosque), within the same courtyard, the mausoleum sits on a square base and rises into an octagonal, internally domed, externally spire-roofed structure. Its front iwan gives it a strong architectural resemblance to Yozgat's Şah Sultan Hatun Mausoleum. An inscription on the iwan's east wall dates the building to the Islamic year 996 (1587–88 CE). On the north side, an iwan-like entrance with a pointed arch and barrel vault, flanked by pointed-arch niches, leads via two stone staircases up to a platform before the tomb chamber; from this two-tiered, arched platform, steps descend into the burial room itself. The square burial chamber sits beneath the octagonal-bodied dome, roofed with a mirror vault and lit by three narrow slit windows. Built entirely of finely cut stone, the structure uses contrasting stone colors to distinguish the burial chamber from the drum above it. Registered for protection in 2005 by the Kayseri Regional Board for the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage, the mausoleum is notable as one of the few Ottoman-era kümbets to survive intact to the present day.
