Four historic stops to see in one day in downtown Yozgat: from the Clock Tower to Karslıoğlu Mansion

Yozgat's stone buildings, inherited from the Ottoman era, are packed into a small area of the city center. This lets visitors tour several different centuries in a single day. The route stretching from the city's central square to its mansions is not just an architectural stroll; it offers a timeline extending from the era of the Çapanoğlu Beylik to the Republic.

The city's pulse: the tower on Cumhuriyet Square

The stone tower rising in the middle of Cumhuriyet Square is the city's most photographed landmark. The tower was built during the Second Constitutional era at the initiative of the then-mayor Tevfikizade Ahmet Bey, commissioned to Şakir Usta, a craftsman from Yozgat. Built of cut yellow stone, the structure consists of seven floors, including the ground floor housing the bells; the clock faces on its four sides show the time to the whole city at once.

Registered in 1978 by the Supreme Council for Immovable Antiquities and Monuments as a cultural asset requiring protection, the tower still works today, filling the square with its bells every hour.

A fountain dedicated to a sultan

Reached by a few minutes' walk from the tower, the Hamidiye Clock Fountain stands adjacent to the outer wall of Çapanoğlu Mosque's eastern cemetery. The fountain was commissioned by the Çapanoğlu family in 1901 to mark the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdülhamid II's accession to the throne. It takes its name from the round clock face set into the pointed-arch niche at its top.

With Ottoman crests in its middle section and an inscription and ornaments at the bottom, the structure has five taps at its base. Considered one of the largest and most ornate fountains of its era in Anatolia, it was recently restored based on old photographs under the leadership of the Sivas Regional Directorate of Foundations.

A legacy turned from mansion into museum

The route's third stop is the Yozgat Museum, housed in Nizamoğlu Mansion, completed in 1871. The mansion was built in the 19th century by a non-Muslim Ottoman citizen and was later purchased by the Nizamoğlu family. Following a restoration that lasted until 1984, the building opened to visitors as a museum in 1985.

On the lower floor of the ten-hall museum, archaeological artifacts unearthed on Yozgat soil are displayed, while the upper halls exhibit ethnographic pieces from Turkish-Islamic civilization; the garden also holds stone artifacts brought from surrounding districts. The hand-crafted ceiling ornaments, dated 1871, in two rooms on the mansion's second floor are among the details visitors linger over most.

The house where Atatürk stayed: Karslıoğlu Mansion

The day's final stop is Karslıoğlu Mansion, one of the most carefully crafted examples of mansion architecture in the city center. Built in 1883, the structure takes its name from Yusuf Karslıoğlu, who served as Yozgat's mayor between 1929 and 1936; the mansion remained in his ownership for many years. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed at this mansion during his first visit to Yozgat on 3 February 1934, and the building was later used for a time as the Governor's Residence.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism took over the mansion in 1977 to convert it into an archaeology museum and completed its first restoration in 1990; today the building is allocated to the Special Provincial Administration's services. The mansion's wooden balconies and stone-arched facade remain among the finest surviving examples of the city's late-19th-century mansion architecture.

This four-stop route, starting at the square and ending at the mansions, can be completed on foot in under half a day. The remaining time can be spent trying the local cuisine at restaurants in the city center.
