Büyüknefes Village Fountain

The Büyüknefes Village Fountain is built from a mix of reused (spolia) stone blocks, finely cut stone, and roughly dressed stone, with a cut-stone basin. Running east–west, the fountain incorporates a triangular-pedimented, acroterion-topped funerary stele as spolia. The stele bears a relief of a falcon or eagle shown in profile, head turned left, wings half-open, body three-quarters turned to the right, with its talons rendered frontally and its feathers carved in fine linear detail, topped by a rosette relief. At the center sits another reused marble block carrying an Arabic charitable-endowment inscription dated 1942. Beside it, a fragment of a colored marble architrave stands out. The fountain's wall also incorporates yet another spolia block bearing an Arabic inscription dated to the Islamic year 1259. Architecturally modest in itself, the fountain draws its significance chiefly from the antique and Ottoman-era spolia embedded in its walls — the eagle/falcon-relief funerary stele in particular points to a Roman or Byzantine-era settlement once present in the area. In this sense, the fountain functions both as a working water structure and, in miniature, as an open-air museum of reused stone artifacts.
