Çapanoğlu Çifte (Çarşı) Hamamı (Bath)

Located about 100 metres southeast of Çapanoğlu Mosque on Saraflar Street, in the Buğday Pazarı (Wheat Market) area, the Çapanoğlu Çifte (Çarşı) Hamamı bears no inscription; its history is instead traced through waqf (endowment) records. These show that the men's section was founded under the endowment deed of Çapanoğlu Mustafa Bey, dated 1 Muharrem 1195 AH (28 December 1780), while the women's section was built by his brother Süleyman Bey in 1208 AH (1793). Structural differences between the two sections confirm they were built at different times: the men's section is larger and follows the classic Ottoman cross-vaulted, four-eyvan, corner-cell (haçvari) bath plan. Because shops once surrounded it, the bathhouse is also popularly known as the 'çarşı hamamı' (market bath). It comprises dressing rooms, warm rooms, hot rooms, latrines and a water reservoir, with the men's and women's sections joining in an L-shape. Despite roughly two and a half centuries of history, the hamam remains in active use today and is listed in the national Cultural Inventory (KE No. 2509) as a protected cultural asset. Together with the nearby Çapanoğlu Mosque, the Hamidiye Fountain with Clock, and the surrounding market fabric, it forms an integral part of the well-preserved Ottoman-era urban core of Yozgat's city centre.
