Çapanoğlu Mosque

The Çapanoğlu (Grand) Mosque, popularly also known as "Ulucami," stands in Yozgat's city centre near Cumhuriyet Square, in the İstanbulluoğlu neighbourhood. The building was raised in two distinct phases: its southern, inner section was commissioned in 1193 AH (1779) by Çapanoğlu Mustafa Bey (recorded in some sources as Mustafa Ahmed Pasha), governor of the Bozok sanjak, while the northern, outer section was added between 1208 AH (1793-94) by his brother, Süleyman Bey. Regarded as one of Anatolia's important examples of the Baroque-influenced Turkish architectural style that emerged under European influence during the Ottoman Empire, the mosque is enclosed by courtyard walls with arched gates on its east and west sides; a third entrance was added from the north in 1964. Visible from virtually every part of the city thanks to its slender minaret, high-drummed dome and corner towers, it ranks among Yozgat's most iconic landmarks. The interior is richly decorated with hand-painted (kalem işi) ornamentation: the walls of the prayer hall, the upper walls, and the curves and soffits of the arches are all adorned with marble-effect painted patterns. Still in active use as a place of worship today, the Çapanoğlu Mosque remains one of the city's most visited cultural sites, reflecting both its architectural sophistication and the historical legacy of the Çapanoğlu dynasty in Yozgat.
