Cevahir Ali Efendi Mosque

The Cevahir Ali Efendi Mosque stands in Yozgat's central Aşağıçatak neighborhood, along the old Yozgat–Sungurlu road, built about 1.5 meters below street level — a hipped-roof, masonry-walled, rectangular structure widely regarded as a fine Anatolian example of 18th-century Ottoman timber construction. An inscription above the prayer hall's entrance dates the mosque to the Islamic year 1202 (1788 CE), commissioned by Cevahir (Cevheri) Ali Efendi on behalf of Hacı Ahmet Ağa, steward to Çapanoğlu Süleyman Bey. The mosque and an accompanying school were originally conceived as a single religious-educational complex (külliye), though the school building has since been lost. A yellow cut-stone courtyard wall surrounds the mosque, entered through a small gate resembling the eastern gate of the Çapanoğlu Mosque. The mosque is lit through rectangular windows that widen from outside to inside, in two tiers. Its northern gallery (mahfil) extends over the entrance porch, giving the building a two-storey appearance from outside and forming a colonnade on seven slender columns. The mosque's most striking feature is its rich interior woodwork and painted ornament: the double-coffered ceiling's central panel is framed by tiered moldings carved and painted with floral and geometric motifs, with a pinecone-like pendant at its center. The preacher's pulpit, built using latticework carving, rises on four Corinthian-capital columns. Cevheri Ali Efendi had a grave prepared for himself at the foot of the minaret, but as he died in Istanbul, it was his brother Hacı Osman Ağa who was buried there instead.
