Musa Ağa Mosque

Musa Ağa Mosque stands on Musa Ağa Street in Yozgat's central Nohutlu neighborhood. According to its inscription, the mosque was built in the Islamic year 1215 (1800 CE) by Musa Ağa bin Hasan, steward of the household of Çapanoğlu Süleyman Bey. A cemetery (hazire) extends along the mosque's east, north and west sides, and the founder's own grave lies about 4–5 meters east of the building. The prayer hall is rectangular (elongated) with a flat ceiling; a cylindrical mihrab sits on the south axis beside an original wooden minbar with latticework-carved railings. In the southeast corner stands a preacher's pulpit, also latticework-carved. Two copper candlesticks, 37 cm in diameter and 74 cm tall, flank the mihrab. A square-based, polygonal-bodied minaret rises at the northeast corner of the entrance porch. Decoratively, the mosque features abundant geometric motifs executed in latticework carving, along with a thuluth calligraphic band that runs around the entire prayer hall. No other ornament appears inside or outside the building. Directly opposite the entrance porch lie the partial remains of a fountain. A modest yet carefully crafted example of late 18th-century Ottoman religious architecture, Musa Ağa Mosque stands as clear evidence that the Çapanoğlu family's wide circle of stewards and household officials also left their own charitable foundations across Yozgat.
