Osmanpaşa (Emirci Sultan) Mausoleum

The Osmanpaşa (Emirci Sultan) Mausoleum stands adjoining the Osmanpaşa Mosque in the town of Osmanpaşa, within Yozgat's central district; its exact construction date is unknown. The person buried here is Osmanpaşa, whose given name was Osman, a disciple (halife) of the Sufi master Ahmed Yesevi; his epithet was Şerifüddin and his father's name was Muhammed. He is also known as "Emirci Sultan." While his birth date is unrecorded, his death is dated to 1240 CE. One of the sarcophagi inside the mausoleum, dated 1239–1240, belongs to Emir Sultan Şerefüddin İsmail bin Muhammed; based on this, the mausoleum itself is believed to have been built around 1239 or 1240. Ahmed Yesevi was a major 12th-century Turkic Sufi and founder of the Yesevi order in Central Asia, whose influence reached deep into Anatolia through his disciples (the "Saints of Khorasan"), who played a significant role in the region's Islamization. Osmanpaşa/Emirci Sultan is regarded as one of this tradition's representatives in the Yozgat region. The mausoleum, which gives the town its name, is today reflected in a large ornamental pool in front of it, standing out both as a place of pilgrimage and prayer and as a local architectural landmark; together with Osmanpaşa Mosque, it forms a small religious complex that remains central to the town's religious and cultural life.
