Yılanboynu Hill

Yılanboynu Hill is a settlement mound located in Saraykent district's Mareşal Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood, about 50 meters north of the district center, reached via a newly opened graded road. The settlement area, roughly 250 meters in diameter, spreads from the steep slopes of the natural rocky hill down to its foot. The western, southern and summit portions of the site have been damaged by illicit digging in the past. Dense surface pottery finds recorded during field surveys indicate that the hill was inhabited during the Early and Middle Bronze Age, the Iron Age (Phrygian period), and the Roman period. With this multi-layered occupation history, Yılanboynu Hill joins other significant mounds in Yozgat's Kızılırmak basin — such as Alişar Höyük and Çadır Höyük — as a site documenting Central Anatolia's long settlement history stretching from pre-Hittite times through the Roman era. Its proximity to the district center also makes it a convenient viewpoint over the surrounding Saraykent landscape. While no systematic excavation has yet been carried out, the surface finds point to significant archaeological potential for the study of the wider Yozgat region.
