Tokmak Hasan Paşa Mosque

Tokmak Hasan Paşa Mosque stands in Paşaköy village, part of Yozgat's Şefaatli district. An inscription painted within an oval cartouche near the top of the east wall records that the mosque was built in 1773–74 by Çerkes Mehmed Paşa and repaired in 1895–96 by Yakup Muzaffer. The building is a classic example of the wooden-columned, wooden-roofed mosque type common across Anatolia, laid out on a north–south rectangular plan. Its walls are built of coursed rubble masonry, plastered and whitewashed; the single-storey structure has two tiers of windows and a hipped roof. A spiral-shaped, single-balcony minaret was added at a later date. Entered through a depressed-arch, molded doorway, the prayer hall has a wood-paneled ceiling carried on eight free-standing and four engaged wooden columns — each resting on a reused (spolia) stone base — that thicken progressively toward the mihrab; the tops of the wooden columns are carved to resemble antique column capitals. Set within a rectangular panel projecting from the wall, the mihrab takes the form of a niche recessed into the masonry. Though plain on the outside, the mosque's interior decoration is remarkable: the wooden ceiling, its central medallions, the column capitals, and the minbar are covered edge to edge in Western-influenced Baroque-Rococo motifs, while wall paintings from various periods inside the hall carry a distinct miniature-painting influence. For these qualities, the mosque was featured in the General Directorate of Foundations' 2023 study "Wooden Mosques, from Tradition to the Future," recognized as one of Yozgat's significant representatives of Anatolia's wooden-columned mosque heritage.
