Salih Paşa Mosque

Sorgun Salih Paşa Mosque stands in the Sorgun district center, alongside the Sorgun stream. The mosque was originally built in 1813 by Salih Paşa. In 1955 it underwent a comprehensive rebuild in keeping with its original form, with only the west wall retained from the historic structure. In its present form, the mosque is a square-planned, domed, twin-minaret building of cut stone. Its walls are lit by two tiers of windows. The central dome is carried on reinforced concrete, supported by large round arches via pendentives. Because the mosque was substantially renewed during its last major reconstruction, neither the mihrab nor the minbar — nor the interior generally — retains any notable historic decorative elements. Bearing witness both to the last century of Ottoman rule through its 1813 origin and to post-early-Republican religious architecture through its 1955 rebuilding, Salih Paşa Mosque is the largest and most visible mosque in the Sorgun town center, remaining central to the district's religious and social life. With its twin minarets and broad dome dominating Sorgun's skyline, and its position on the bank of the Sorgun stream, the mosque also serves as a key orientation point in the town center.
