Saray Çapanoğlu Mosque

The Saray Çapanoğlu Mosque stands in Saray township's Cumhuriyet neighborhood, part of Yozgat's Yerköy district. Although the mosque itself carries no inscription, inscriptions on its candlesticks date it to the Islamic year 1163 (1749 CE), commissioned by Kapıcıbaşı Çapanoğlu Ahmet Paşa, a leading figure of the Çapanoğlu family. The prayer hall follows a three-nave plan extending south, the naves separated by four square-sectioned wooden columns arranged in two rows. The mihrab, shifted eastward off the north–south axis, takes the form of a polygonal niche; the minbar is a simple piece of wooden craftsmanship. To the north, a gallery projects forward like a balcony. The interior is lit by eight windows, two per wall except on the north side, widening from outside to inside. The prayer hall is entered through a round-arched door aligned with the mihrab axis, with an entrance porch to its north. Only the mosque's woodwork survives as decoration today, though the walls were once entirely covered in painted ornament. Externally the mosque is rectangular (elongated) in plan with a hipped roof; a minaret, built in 1957, stands west of the entrance porch. The mosque was registered for protection in 2001 by the Kayseri Regional Board for the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage, standing as evidence of the Çapanoğlu family's charitable foundation activity beyond the Yozgat city center during the mid-18th century.
