Akdağmadeni: The Big Story of a Small District

Akdağmadeni is less known than Yozgat's other districts, but a handful of streets in its center offer a surprisingly well-preserved cross-section of late-19th-century Ottoman provincial architecture. This route is designed as a half-day excursion. When you arrive in the district, stop first at the Ziraat Bank Building and the nearby PTT Building — both still serving their original functions, reflecting the official institutional architecture of the period. A few steps away, the Old Akdağ Prison (Tiftik Han) awaits you — one of the district's most striking buildings, with a layered past having served as both a caravanserai and a prison. Continue on to the adjacent Old Courthouse (today's Secondary School building) and the Küpçüoğlu House, now used as a health clinic; the three structures are so close together that you can see them all by circling a single square. If you want to see the district's religious/historical layer, take a look at İstanbulluoğlu Mosque — originally built as a church and later converted into a mosque — and the Akdağmadeni Church in the district center; both carry traces of the region's multicultural population in the 19th century. Before you finish your visit, if you're there in winter, be sure to try Akdağmadeni's geographically-indicated salep — made from wild orchids grown in its forests, it's considered one of Turkey's finest. If you have time, take a short drive from the district center to Kadıpınarı Nature Park and close out the day in the coolness of the Akdağ forests.
