Nature Tour in Northern Yozgat: From Lavender to Canyon

The north of Yozgat shows a completely different face from the historic fabric of the center — the lush green valley of Çekerek, the highlands of Aydıncık, and Kadışehri's orchards in between. This route brings three districts together in a single day of nature, entirely by car, covering a total of about 85-90 km between stops. Head northeast from Yozgat center toward Kadışehri; passing through farmland along the way, you'll reach Kabalı Orchard in about an hour. If you go in August-September, you have a good chance of catching the apple and apricot harvest — don't leave without buying fresh fruit from local producers. From here, continue northwest toward Çekerek; it's about 25 km to the district center, a mountainous but scenic road. When you arrive in Çekerek, take a short break for lunch at Millet Bahçesi, then head a few minutes further to Lavender Island — the purple flower fields peak in early July, so have your camera ready if you're planning to go then. Since the water is plentiful in summer, you can also set aside time for a short rafting tour on the Çekerek Rafting Course; a few local businesses run half-day tours, and calling ahead to book makes things easier. Heading west from Çekerek to Aydıncık, about a 45-minute drive brings you up to Şebekpınarı Highland; thanks to its high altitude, this highland stays cool even in summer, ideal for spending the day relaxing with a tent or a rug spread out. From there, head down and take a tea break by Pelitli Lake, completing the short walking trail around it. Finish the route at the district's most striking spot, Kazankaya Canyon — the view from the lookout point at the canyon's edge is especially stunning in the afternoon hours when the sun lights up the canyon walls. The best time for this route is late June to September; highland roads may close in winter. If you set out early in the morning, you can catch the sunset at Kazankaya and reach Yozgat center before dark on the way back. Although the route's three districts seem far apart at first glance, they actually lie within the same valley system fed by the Çekerek River, so as you move from one district to another you can feel the change in vegetation and temperature — from Kadışehri's fertile plain to Çekerek's humid valley, then to Aydıncık's drier, rockier highland. Be sure to bring water and sunscreen, as midday hours can get quite hot at the shadeless lookout points at Şebekpınarı and Kazankaya in particular. If you're looking for a quiet nature day away from crowds, we recommend going on a weekday; weekends can get crowded with picnickers, especially around Kazankaya Canyon.
